Former U.S President Barack Obama, 62, and his wife, Michelle Obama, 59, were spotted on a rare public date night, enjoying the U.S. Open in Queens, New York on Monday! In photos you can see below, the dad of two smiled as he sat alongside his wife, who sat close to her husband as he rested his arm on her leg. The former First Lady wore a denim dress paired with a stylish dark cardigan sweater, accessorizing with a chunky black bracelet and simple silver hoop earrings. Barack wore a white button up shirt with beige jacket and slacks. The famous duo was there for the Women’s Singles First Round match pitting Laura Siegemund of Germany against Coco Gauff of the United States. Coco took the win.

Barack and Michelle clearly enjoy their time together after daughters Malia, 24, and Sasha, 22, moved out together. But in a revealing 2020 interview with PEOPLE, the former Commander in Chief admitted that being in the White House had been difficult on their marriage. Marital tension, he said, “was the truth of our time in the White House.”

“Michelle very much believed in the work I did but was less optimistic about what I could get done. … She’s more skeptical about politics and more mindful of the sacrifices to the family,” he divulged in the interview. Nevertheless, he says they survived it as a couple

“I think we came out of it whole,” he told the outlet. “There were great joys in the White House. There was never a time where we didn’t recognize what an extraordinary privilege it was to be there. Most importantly, our children emerged intact and they are wonderful, kind, thoughtful, creative — and not entitled — young women. So that’s a big sigh of relief.”

Since they left the high-pressure job, he confessed, Michelle in particular had been able to “let out a breath and relax.”  “You know the old adage, ‘if mom’s happy, everybody’s happy’?” he said. “It very much applies in our household.”

Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition: What’s the latest?

Tech giant Microsoft made headlines in early 2022 by announcing its intention to buy Activision Blizzard, one of the world’s most-valuable gaming companies, for $68.7bn (~£50.5bn). The news took the world by storm, and was quickly labelled one of the most influential deals in the history of gaming.

Yet it’s July 2023, and the two companies are still separate due to a number of legal hurdles, lawsuits and inquiries from governments all around the world.

The merger may still go ahead, but no one truly knows if or when. The original deadline for the merger to complete was July 18th, however this has now been extended. We’ve compiled a recap to keep you abreast of the Activision Blizzard deal’s trials and tribulations.

Why are countries investigating the merger?

Due to the scale of the deal, regulators around the world fear that this acquisition may hurt competition and give Microsoft — which already owns Xbox — too much power in the gaming market.

Fears have centred around the potential effect on market share in the console gaming market. Microsoft could, regulators argue, make Activision Blizzard’s games (including the ultra-successful Call of Duty franchise) exclusive to its consoles, thereby hurting competition with rivals Sony and Nintendo. Other concerns have been around the potential impact on market share in the growing cloud gaming market.

Even though the two companies are both US-based, if the deal is not approved in other countries, the newly-merged entity would risk not being able to conduct business in those countries.

It is worth noting that the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is not the first big-money spending spree on gaming for the tech conglomerate, which already owns Xbox. Microsoft owns Minecraft, Halo developer 343 Industries, Obsidian Entertainment, Forza developer Playground Games, and Bethesda owner ZeniMax. Activision Blizzard would, however, be Microsoft’s largest purchase.

Where has the merger been approved?

The Microsoft Activision Blizzard merger has already been approved in several markets around the world. These include the European Union, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Serbia, Chile, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and China.

The first countries to accept the merger were Serbia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Chile in 2022, with other countries approving it in spring 2023 and beyond.

Which countries have rejected the merger?

As of right now, the merger is currently pending in the United States. In December 2022, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued to block the deal. Then on June 12th, 2023, the FTC filed another lawsuit, this time seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the merger going ahead while its wider lawsuit continues, following reports Microsoft and Activision Blizzard were planning on consummating the deal despite remaining regulatory hurdles, the New York Times reported.

On July 11, 2023, the District Court in the Northern District of California rejected the FTC’s restraining order preventing the deal from closing, after five days of testimony. The judge ruled that the FTC had not proven the likelihood it would prevail on its claim that the merger would substantially lessen competition. The FTC appealed the decision on July 13th, but the appeal was denied.

While the FTC lost its case for a restraining order, the FTC still had its separate December 2022 lawsuit pending. However, BNN Bloomberg reported in July that the FTC has paused this lawsuit, clearing the way for talks between the FTC and Microsoft.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocked the deal in April 2023. In a surprise decision, the CMA said it would not allow the deal to go ahead primarily because of the consequences it would have on the cloud gaming market. Microsoft and Activision Blizzard then appealed. In August, the CMA technically formally rejected the original deal, however allowed Microsoft to submit a restructured deal for review, which is now being considered by the CMA.

Countries such as New Zealand and Australia are still reviewing the merger.

Why would Microsoft buy Activision Blizzard?

When the news of the acquisition first broke, in January 2022, Reuters ran the headline ‘Microsoft to gobble up Activision in a $69 billion metaverse bet‘. This was at the height of the metaverse trend and would be the largest gaming industry deal in history. Microsoft is said to have wanted to acquire Activision Blizzard to further improve its presence in the gaming industry, and the metaverse, and to consolidate itself as the de facto king of cloud gaming.

With Activision’s titles under its umbrella and with Xbox and its Game Pass and XboX Live platforms to support it, few companies could challenge Microsoft in the gaming field. Acquiring Activision Blizzard gives Microsoft access to multi-million dollar IPs such as Call of Duty, Overwatch, Diablo, and WarCraft franchises, as well as studios such as Treyarch and Infinity Ward, at a time when video game IP is proving highly valuable — just see the success of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation.

The company would also become a major stakeholder in esports, and get access to esports leagues and platforms such as Major League Gaming, the Overwatch League, and the Call of Duty League.

Couple all this with Activision Blizzard’s internal problems and affairs, and the fact that its CEO Bobby Kotick was investigated by the SEC, and one can see what makes the deal appealing to both sides. Microsoft’s offer came during the height of legal and public backlash over lawsuits alleging widespread sexual harassment problems at the publisher — and while it’s hard to think of $69bn as a discount, its legal and PR problems may have given Microsoft a better deal.

Timeline of the deal’s troubles

Unfortunately for Microsoft, the scope of the deal and its effect on the gaming industry caught the eyes of many regulators, governments, competitors, and agencies worldwide. One of the first critics of the move was Sony, its largest competitor in the field of gaming consoles and a staunch opponent of the acquisition. Sony wanted to be sure that Microsoft will keep all of its newly-acquired IPs on PlayStation, a direct competitor to Xbox, so is naturally against the deal.

It was at the beginning of February that the United States Federal Trade Commission started investigating the deal. Considering the scope, it was apparent that this will not be another swift deal for Microsoft, a fact that was proven multiple times afterward. The FTC formally announced a lawsuit on December 8, 2022, putting the deal under much more pressure.

The next big blow to the merger was made by the CMA, the UK’s regulator, when it provisionally opposed the deal in January 2023. Many expected the CMA to allow the merger after it released a statement in March saying one of its three key concerns had been addressed by new evidence. However, in April 2023, the government body prevented the proposed purchase over concerns about the “future of the cloud gaming market”. Microsoft did present a solution to the CMA, which was deemed not adequate and thus rejected. As a result, both Microsoft and Activision Blizzard appealed the decision.

Attention shifted to the US on July 11th with an important win for Microsoft and Activision Blizzard when a court denied the FTC’s request for a restraining order it had filed to prevent the deal from passing. This effectively meant the two parties could go ahead with the merger in the US if they wanted to, though they couldn’t operate in the UK if they did so.

On July 19th, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard announced they had extended the original July 18th deadline until October 18th, to give them more time to reach an agreement with the UK’s CMA.

On August 22, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft proposed a new deal to the CMA, after the agency confirmed that it will indeed block the original deal. In a blog post, Microsoft stated that the new deal “presents a substantially different transaction under UK law than the transaction submitted to the CMA in 2022.” Microsoft said that it had notified the CMA of the restructured transaction and that it expects the CMA’s review process to be completed before October 18th, the new deadline for the merger following Microsoft and Activision Blizzard’s 90 day extension.

The new deal notably included a major agreement to transfer streaming rights of Activision Blizzard games on PC and console to Ubisoft, another game developer and publisher, for 15 years. This potential deal will allow Ubisoft to offer Activision Blizzard’s games on cloud services that are not running Windows. The CMA said it would consider this deal and approach it as if it was a completely new.

However, the change in the underlying deal may mean the EU has to reconsider its own stance. Per media reports, an EU spokesperson said: “The commission is carefully assessing whether the developments in the UK require another notification to the commission.” The EU gave its blessing to the original deal in May, so it may have to reinvestigate this new deal submitted to the CMA if it is substantially different.

What would the acquisition mean for esports?

The acquisition would set Microsoft up as a key player in esports at a difficult time for the industry. Its involvement may offer a mark of legitimacy as esports goes through a downturn in investor confidence and many companies are struggling financially.

Importantly, Activision Blizzard’s Overwatch League and Call of Duty League are floundering. Franchise owners reportedly started collective bargaining against the company due to high costs and missed promises on revenue. Most sponsors also left the leagues following Activision Blizzard’s sexual harassment lawsuits.

In a recent financial filing, Activision Blizzard quietly stated that its leagues “continue to face headwinds which are negatively impacting the operations and, potentially, the longevity of the leagues under the current business model.”

In light of that, big-money and big-name support from Microsoft could help turn around their fortunes.

On the other hand, its potential new owner might not be as invested in Activision Blizzard’s grand franchising experiments, and make decisions based on their current financial footing — which could potentially see a downsizing, or even cancellation, of the leagues.

What will happen next?

Activision Blizzard and Microsoft will want to find a way to get along with regulators in the US and UK in much the same way they did with the EU, by agreeing to a set of demands. But the UK already rejected Microsoft’s remedies when it blocked the deal. Overturning that decision via the appeals process will mean convincing regulators that the CMA made a mistake in its first decision, a difficult task.

Right now, Microsoft is trying to win over as many governments as it can, with China and the European Union bringing good bargaining power to the table.

After the EU approved the deal in May 2023, Alex Haffner, a competition partner at London law firm Fladgate, told Esports Insider: “Critics of the CMA’s stance, of which there have been many, will inevitably seize on [the EU’s] decision as proving the point made that the UK’s regulatory regime is too rigid and stifles innovation. Microsoft and Activision’s lawyers will also use the decision to provide greater ballast to their appeal of the CMA’s decision, which is in the works.”

The lawsuit against the merger filed in California will surely present a large hurdle in the home country of Activision Blizzard and Microsoft, and it seems like the matter will be resolved in federal court.

According to Axios reporter Stephen Totilo, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer recently told the press he was “committed” to the attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard, stating that they’re “trying to get to solutions” with regulators.

With the news of Ubisoft entering the fray as a possible solution to CMA blocking the deal and the EU thinking about the deal yet again, it seems like we are no closer to the end of this saga. Sure, one step has been made forward, but it is still up to the CMA and the EU Commission to give a green or red light.

However, it remains to be seen whether and how the deal could go ahead if the UK fails to give its blessing. July 2023 will bring further developments in this high-stakes deal — for better or for worse.

Exploring ‘The Making of Karateka’: An Interactive Documentary on Video Game Creation

The Making of Karateka

The Making of Karateka is Digital Eclipse’s first title in its Gold Master Series, a line of interactive video game documentaries. Much of the format is similar to the studio’s Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration title released last year. While that game was a broad overview of a publisher’s legacy, The Making of Karateka goes deeper into a more singular focus. This results in a one-of-a-kind interactive documentary just as innovative as the game it’s covering.

Released in 1984 for the Apple II computer, Karateka was a landmark release. 20-year-old designer Jordan Mechner took inspiration from Akira Kurosawa movies and Disney animation for one of the most cinematic games of the era. Sure, the fighting is a bit simplistic for today’s standards, and the plot is rather thin (you’re saving a princess). Still, it’s a remarkable game given the time period — one that changed gaming forever.

As the documentary portion reveals, Karateka was not Mechner’s first attempt at a game. He had previously tried to create an Asteroids clone eventually dubbed Deathbounce. Learning of Mechner’s early failures is fascinating. We get to see every surviving document, from publisher feedback to excerpts from his college journal. It’s a fascinating piece of history, one that shows rejection forced him to innovate rather than chase the arcade trends of others.

The Making of Karateka features an interactive timeline, which allows players to watch video interviews and featurettes, view historical documents, and even play prototype and full versions of the games mentioned.

The real star of the video portions winds up being Mechner’s father, Francis, a research psychologist and concert pianist who composed the soundtrack for Karateka and Prince of Persia. It’s a famous fact that Mechner rotoscoped footage of his younger brother in 1989’s Prince of Persia. But the documentary really reveals what a full family effort Karateka was and how much support and understanding Mechner received from his parents. It shows that genius talent still often needs to be fostered and supported to unlock its full potential.

The documentary does a great job of showcasing how rapidly early PC gaming advanced during the time period. Mechner, a student at Yale at the time, was anxious about whether he’d be able to release Karateka in time for it to have the impact he hoped. With so much innovation, something that looked promising could be outdated rather quickly. Thankfully, Karateka was able to find the audience it deserved and allowed Mechner to go on to create his magnum opus a few years later in Prince of Persia — which also deserves to get the Gold Master Series treatment down the line.

Three versions of Karateka are included — the original Apple II release, plus the Commodore 64 and Atari 8-Bit ports. All are fascinating time capsules that are still enjoyable to play today, and Mechner even provides commentary with his father in a playthrough of the Apple release. Even more interesting are the prototypes, as you can see it was iterated upon, and how publisher Brøderbund helped polish it into the classic it is regarded to be today.

However, the coolest addition to this collection is “Karateka Remastered,” a reimagined version of the original game that incorporates ideas Mechner scrapped due to time constraints and technical limitations. It’s a much more modern version of the game — you can even give yourself extra lives to make it less brutal — and even incorporates an axed leopard boss fight that proves to be an interesting puzzle. It’s a great way to showcase how ahead of the curve Mechner was with his design, as the A.I. still proves challenging and rewarding to beat nearly 40 years later. Unfortunately, there are occasional bugs in the remastered release (including one that forced me to restart after an enemy disappeared off-screen), but it’s a minor issue that doesn’t dampen what is a really cool extra.

What’s most special about The Making of Karateka is that everything is put in its proper context. Simply playing the ports or even the original game isn’t nearly as impressive without having the proper historical context of where gaming was at the time. That’s what makes this release so special, as it shows the early years of Mechner’s incredible career in incredible detail and frames it appropriately.

It’s packed with fascinating historical documents, such as fan mail from Doom designer John Romero. I came away so impressed with the level of care. I only wish that the game had a lengthier wrap-up section, as Prince of Persia and the rest of Mechner’s career endeavors are only briefly mentioned. That said — I understand keeping the focus on Karateka first and foremost.

The Making of Karateka Review: The Final Verdict

The Making of Karateka isn’t just a meaningful step forward for game preservation and history. This is proof-positive of what makes video games such a fascinating and thrilling medium. Learning all the work that went into it makes it all the more meaningful. This is especially true when you get to the finished product after multiple prototypes and dozens of design documents.

Add in the fact that Karateka has stood the test of time — and that the remastered version is a blast — and you’ve got the perfect game to kickstart Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master Series.

Kizuna no Allele is an anime project developed by VTuber Kizuna AI in collaboration with Isaribi Inc. The first season premiered earlier this year in April and ran for 12 episodes. The Kizuna AI YouTube channel first launched in 2016, and quickly took off from there.

As of this writing, the channel has more than 3 million subscribers on the main Kizuna AI YouTube channel, with the “AI Games” spin-off channel having over 1.51 million subscribers. Kizuna AI has also appeared on a variety of television programs in Japan, and has also performed as a musical artist.

“Following the formation of ‘PathTLive’, members Miracle, Quan, Noelle, Cris and Riz will finally compete in the heat of battle at the Virtual Grid Awards,” reads the official synopsis of the film. “In the second series BRT5, VICONIC, 3DM8 will also make an appearance, so you can look forward to seeing how the girls interact with each other.”

The Idol Got Canceled After 1 Season

The Idol will not return for a second season on HBO.

According to Deadline, HBO has opted to pull the plug on The Idol after only one season. This development is unsurprising, given the controversial show’s overwhelmingly negative reception and alleged behind-the-scenes drama.

“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

What happened with HBO’s The Idol?

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson created The Idol alongside Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) and Reza Fahim. The series premiered on HBO and Max early this past June, running for five episodes through early July. It stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, an up-and-coming pop star who attempts to mount a comeback after a nervous breakdown led to the cancellation of her most recent tour. Jocelyn soon enters a relationship with Tedros, a nightclub owner, self-help guru, and cult leader played by Tesfaye.

Levinson directed all five episodes of The Idol. However, HBO originally picked the show up for six episodes back in 2021, with Amy Seimetz attached to direct them. It was in 2022 that a massive creative overhaul resulted in Seimetz exiting the project and the number of episodes being reduced to five. Shooting on The Idol was reportedly 80 percent complete when Seimetz left, and the subsequent rewrites and reshoots allegedly scrapped her original vision for the show.

The revamped version of The Idol ultimately debuted to strong viewership numbers, but very weak reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the HBO series currently holds an approval rating of 19 percent based on over 102 professional reviews, as well as an audience score of 41 percent. “Every bit as florid and sleazy as the industry it seeks to satirize, The Idol places itself on a pedestal with unbridled style but wilts under the spotlight,” the critical consensus reads.

Netflix has released the first The Killer teaser trailer for iconic director David Fincher‘s upcoming crime thriller movie. It is set to release in select theaters on Friday, October 27, and on Netflix on Friday, November 10.

The Killer was written by Andrew Kevin Walker and is based on the graphic novel series The Killer, which was written by Alexis Nolent (a.k.a Matz) and illustrated by Luc Jacamon. It was directed by David Fincher and produced by Ceán Chaffin. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton.
